Banglele Indonesia is an inspiring story from the tragic haze disaster that struck Riau Province in 2015. As wildfires raged across the province, causing severe environmental damage, the founders of Banglele Indonesia saw an opportunity to start a venture that would eventually transform the face of aquaculture in Indonesia.

During that time, the thick haze made all outdoor activities impossible. Schools were closed, the local economy was hit hard, and poor air quality seriously impacted public health. Yet, amidst these limitations, social media has become a window for people to stay connected with the outside world. For the founders of Banglele Indonesia, it was a time of reflection, sparking ideas on how to create something meaningful in the face of adversity.

The 2015 haze disaster not only affected the environment but also highlighted the economic vulnerability of local communities. At a time when many were trapped in uncertainty, the idea to market local products online was born. One such idea was to sell smoked catfish under the brand “Lele Kabut Asap” (Smoked Haze Catfish), directly inspired by the environmental conditions of the time. Smoked catfish was chosen for its economic value and its longevity as a food solution during a crisis.

Smoked haze catfish, the origin of Banglele Indonesia

From "smoked haze catfish" to biofloc farming

The public's response to Lele Kabut Asap (LKA) was overwhelmingly positive. The product quickly went viral on social media, attracting attention from people across Indonesia. Its popularity was driven by the unique flavor of the smoked catfish and effective digital marketing. This success became the first step for Banglele Indonesia to seriously expand its business, as market demand continued to grow.

Initially, LKA products were produced by a local small and medium enterprise (SME) in Riau, with Banglele Indonesia acting as the marketing partner. This collaboration created a mutually beneficial synergy, with Banglele Indonesia leveraging its digital expertise to broaden the product's market reach. This experience gave the company valuable insights into the immense potential of the fisheries sector, particularly in terms of developing innovative, value-added local fish products.

As the haze crisis subsided, Banglele Indonesia decided not to stop selling smoked catfish but to go further by establishing a catfish hatchery in early 2016. With material and technical support from close associates, Banglele Indonesia began focusing on producing high-quality catfish seeds. These seeds were sourced from certified broodstock, such as the Mutiara and Sangkuriang catfish strains, known for their superior quality. This decision was based on the understanding that quality seeds are a key element in successful aquaculture, opening new opportunities for Banglele Indonesia to become a leader in the local fisheries industry.

Developing biofloc technology and becoming a pioneer

Over time, the success of the hatchery opened broader opportunities for Banglele Indonesia to introduce modern aquaculture technology, particularly the biofloc system. This technology allows fish farming by utilizing microorganisms to maintain water quality, making it more efficient and environmentally friendly. The people of Riau, especially catfish farmers, enthusiastically embraced this technology due to its significant benefits, including feed savings and improved harvest yields.

The biofloc farming training organized by Banglele Indonesia attracted attention from many parties, including government officials and private companies, who recognized the vast potential of the technology. As a result, Banglele Indonesia was invited to be a keynote speaker at various training events, not only in Riau Province but also in other regions across Indonesia.

In addition to training, Banglele Indonesia actively participated in national campaigns such as Gerakan Memasyarakatkan Makan Ikan (Gemarikan), a movement aimed at increasing fish consumption in the community. In collaboration with the government, the company introduced Good Fish Hatchery Practices (CPIB), Good Fish Farming Practices (CBIB), and Good Fish Quarantine Practices (CKIB), further solidifying Banglele Indonesia’s position as a key player in the fisheries industry.

Expanding to international markets and gaining global recognition

In 2018, Banglele Indonesia made a significant milestone by organizing an international freshwater fish farming training using the biofloc system. The training was attended by over 30 participants from five different countries, who traveled to Riau to participate in the intensive sessions. This event not only marked a major achievement for Banglele Indonesia but also opened doors for global recognition. With high international enthusiasm, Banglele Indonesia successfully positioned itself as a pioneer in applying biofloc technology in the aquaculture industry.

The success of the international training had a profound impact on Banglele Indonesia’s reputation, leading to further visits from foreign partners interested in learning and collaborating on fishery technology development. As Banglele Indonesia gained international attention, the company became a reference for many seeking to adopt advanced technology in fish and shrimp farming. Visits from various countries provided concrete proof of the training's success and strengthened Banglele Indonesia’s position as a global player in the fisheries industry.

Beyond its success in catfish farming, Banglele Indonesia continued to innovate by launching new technologies in aquaculture. Through Banglele International Aquaculture Consultant (BIAC), the company pioneered an innovation: vannamei shrimp farming using freshwater and the biofloc system, along with round pond tarpaulin media. This innovation offers a solution for regions without access to seawater but that are keen to develop their aquaculture sector. The technology has garnered attention from global partners seeking to implement similar methods in their areas, further enhancing Banglele Indonesia’s contribution to global fisheries development.

A vision for the future; connecting farmers for a better Indonesia

The journey of Banglele Indonesia, from a small online business to an international player in the fisheries sector, stands as a clear example of perseverance, innovation, and unwavering commitment. What began as a humble start, with their smoked catfish product going viral on social media, has evolved into a global success story. Through adaptability and resilience, Banglele Indonesia has not only overcome challenges but has also demonstrated the ability to thrive. Initially recognized only on a local level, the brand has now achieved international acclaim, thanks to its dedication to introducing eco-friendly modern aquaculture technology.

Throughout this long journey, the company became known as "Banglele." The name originates from one of its founders, Barkah Tri Basuki, who now serves as the chief commissioner of PT Banglele Indonesia Maju (PT BIM). With the slogan "Connecting Farmers for a Better Indonesia," Banglele Indonesia continues to hold fast to its vision of empowering local farmers and building a brighter future through advanced aquaculture technology. This vision is reflected in every initiative they undertake, from fish and shrimp farming training to the introduction of innovative biofloc systems. Their eco-friendly and sustainable approach not only boosts production yields but also helps protect the environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

Banglele Indonesia's commitment to continuous innovation and sharing knowledge with farming communities worldwide further cements its position as a leader in the fisheries industry. Through various training programs and international collaborations, Banglele Indonesia not only distributes the latest technologies but also opens opportunities for partnerships with those who share their vision. In doing so, they contribute to the creation of a sustainable and mutually beneficial fisheries system for all involved.

Banglele Indonesia is an inspiring example of how, from a major disaster, unforeseen opportunities can emerge. What started as a small idea born in the midst of a crisis has grown into a powerful force with significant impact both nationally and internationally. This success story not only highlights the tremendous potential within the fisheries sector but also offers hope and motivation for many to continue innovating and contributing toward a better world through relentless effort and dedication.
